ESN workshop "The Beginning Volunteer" on 25th April 2009

Enthusiastic to embark on your first visit to an elderly home but not sure how you can contribute?
Want to understand more about volunteering in an elderly home?

We believe the key is to 'prepare' the new volunteer with basic skills to undertake the volunteering activities in an elderly related agency. In this workshop, we attempt to cover the various aspects - physiological (Understanding the elderly you are working with) to physical aspects (Basic wheelchair handling) that a new volunteer need to take care of.

“The Beginning Volunteer” workshop also provides a good opportunity to network with volunteers from other elderly sector volunteer agencies and understand how other volunteers conduct their activities. The workshop ends with a sharing session by a volunteer with many years of volunteering experience.

In this “Volunteer Organisation & Management Workshop”, what we hope to achieve is to share good practices of volunteer management through a forum style discussion to better prepare the volunteer leader in facing the potential challenges.

Teamwork is another big component in a volunteer group. “Teamwork? Teamwork!” attempts to emphasise the importance of teamwork through a game setting.

Handicraft work is a good activity to engage elderly in. In this workshop, we will teach volunteers how to do dough-sculpturing, which they in turn teach elderly to make useful handicraft.

Literally, the “Transferring and Transporting Elderly” section is to equip the volunteer with skills to handle the elderly during transferring and transporting the elderly via wheelchair. We have invited a specialist to share with us the techniques to transfer and transport an elderly as we engage them in activities, considering both the safety of the elderly and the care-giver.

Successful Completion of ESN Workshops in Sept

We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the ESN workshops on "How to be an Effective Volunteer" and "Mentorship & Leadership" on the 17th Sept 2006. The workshops went smoothly with the support of the organising committee under the charge of Lay Guat and Huiquan. Well done!

The response from the 25 participants was very good, and they enjoyed the sessions.

We will like to thank all the participants for taking part and hope to see more volunteers join our future workshops in 2007!
